In a world increasingly shaped by science and technology, the importance of role models in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) cannot be overstated. One such inspiring figure is Paul Caesar Flores, a dedicated researcher who is not just making strides in his field but also actively engaging and inspiring the youth of today.

Paul’s fascination with science began in his childhood. He fondly recalls, “Bata pa ako, mahilig na talaga ako sa science. Nung bata pa ko mahilig ako manood ng mga shows, yung Sineskwela, yung Myth Busters sa Discovery Channel, mga shows sa National Geographic Channel.” These early influences sparked a passion that would lead him down the path of scientific inquiry. He adds, “Mga cartoon shows tulad ng Jimmy Neutron, Dexter’s Laboratory, ayon malaking part din yon ng childhood ko.”

His journey into science continued to flourish in high school, where he attended the Philippine Science High School (PhiSci) in Iloilo. Here, his passion was reinforced through a structured science curriculum and involvement in research projects. Paul proudly shares, “Dun mas nareinforce ‘yung pagkahilig ko sa science… napabilang ako sa Intel ISEF… tungkol sa coral transplantation, and then nanalo siya ng award sa environmental science category, 4th place.”

Transitioning to college, Paul faced pivotal choices. He initially pursued Electrical Engineering but eventually found his true calling in Geology. “Walang kumuha ng geology, so sinubukan kong maiba… Pero nung college, hindi ko masyadong na-appreciate yung geology na subject,” he admits, highlighting a struggle many students face in finding their passion within academia. However, his perspective shifted during his master’s studies, reigniting his love for the subject under the mentorship of his supervisor.

Now, as a PhD candidate, Paul’s research focuses on subduction zones and the newly discovered phenomenon of “slow earthquakes.” He explains, “Yung research ko ngayon ay inaalam ko kung bakit gano’n ‘yung distribution ng slow earthquake, bakit siya clustered.” His work has the potential to significantly contribute to our understanding of tectonic activity and its implications for disaster preparedness.

Paul’s journey has not been without its obstacles. He candidly shares, “‘Yung pinakamalaking challenge as a researcher sa Pilipinas, research assistant, ay contractual ‘yung trabaho.” The unpredictability of contracts and salary delays have tested his resilience. “Imagine nag-sign ka ng 6 months na contract, tapos minsan ‘yung sweldo mo for that 6 months, hindi pumapasok,” he reveals, illustrating the financial stress that many researchers face. Despite these challenges, Paul has remained committed to his work, often relying on the support of loved ones during tough times.

When asked about the impact of his research, Paul is realistic yet hopeful. “‘Yung impact na yon hindi siya instant… Pwedeng, years or decades, or hundreds of years ‘yan.” However, he recognizes the importance of contributing to societal knowledge. “Magandang example ‘yun na nagkaron talaga ng impact sa society ‘yung research na ginawa,” he says, referencing the significance of research on the Benham Rise.

For young Filipinos aspiring to enter the field of science, Paul advises, “Dapat buo yung loob mo… malaking part din na ihanda mo yung sarili mo sa mental na stress.” He emphasizes the necessity of resilience, continuous learning, and adaptability in overcoming the hurdles inherent in scientific research.

Beyond his research, Paul is also committed to science communication. As a member of the Marine and Earth Science Learning Hub and the Behind the Science Podcast, he actively promotes scientific literacy and engagement. “Gumagawa kami ng mga videos explaining ‘yung mga research studies ng mga fellow Filipino scientists,” he explains, noting the positive feedback he receives from audiences enjoying science content.

Paul’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion in the pursuit of scientific inquiry. As he continues to break barriers in STEM, he stands as a beacon of inspiration for the next generation, encouraging them to embrace science and forge their own paths in this vital field. His work, shared through platforms like the Marine & Earth Science Learning Hub on Facebook and the Behind The Science Podcast available on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube, offers accessible insights into his field. The journey of Paul Caesar Flores embodies the spirit of #AngIdolKongSTEM illustrates that with dedication and resilience, anything is possible.
